Pasture raised

Our Story

The Local Roost is a small family farm owned and operated by Canberra Locals. The farm was purchased at the start of 2022 with the idea of combining rural living and a wholesome family life with a productive agricultural business that restores health to the land.
Our dream was to move to a small rural property that we could convert from cleared, overgrazed paddocks to a biodynamic & productive farm with the intention to restore soil health by carefully managing livestock rotation, re-populating trees and native grasses.

 FAQs

  • Our pasture raised hens have continuous access to pasture throughout their life on the farm.  They are moved around the farm regularly in their mobile trailer in a sustainably managed rotational grazing system to ensure forage is always fresh and available. The mobile trailer provides shelter when the birds want it, nest boxes for laying eggs in comfort and perches for them to roost at night.

  • You may have noticed that we haven't included the stocking density (number of hens per hectare) on our carton. This was intentional!
It is a requirement for 'free range farms' to declare this, but as we are a pasture raised farm and we move our hens regularly to fresh grass it doesn't matter as much!
If we were to put a number to it though and we calculated it the same way that other farms do, our stocking density would be about 64hens per hectare

  • No. Since the purchase in early 2022 there have been no applications of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides in any of our paddocks. Besides, our chickens do the fertilising and weeding for us!

  • Our Hens are free to scratch and forage for seeds, grasses and grubs in the pasture all day. We also provide high quality, specially made poultry feed from reputable stockfeed manufacturers to ensure they lay delicious, healthy eggs.

  • The Local Roost’s farm shed is a brand new building that is completely off grid.  Drinking water is collected from the roof and stored in large volume tanks where it is filtered and UV sterilised before making its way to the hens.

We also have a stand-alone solar system comprising more than 40 panels. The solar system provides electricity to the building for general lighting, power and importantly cooling to store our eggs in optimal conditions whilst being prepped and packed for you to enjoy fresh.
